Pet Peeves in the Workplace

As a professional in the communications industry, the workplace is constantly changing. What are your pet peeves when it comes to technology use and etiquette?

For example: When is it okay to text your boss? How casual is "Casual Friday"? Should you "friend" your clients on Facebook

Tell us your opinions and experiences in our Comments section and see what others had to say!

  1. It definitely is a new phenomenon that requires some good judgment. My boss and I have exchanged phone numbers, and have texted a few times--usually only to say that one or the other is running late or won't be into the office on a specific day. Then again, she's a younger woman, so I feel as though she is privvy to the ways of technology. The majority of my company is also on Facebook, so we are all friends on the site as well. I can't say that many people post too many inappropriate things. I think once you are out of college and in the working world people tend to mature up a bit and realize that posting photos of late drunken nights not be the best.

I would have to say, however, that my biggest pet peeve is inter-office IMing rather than going up to the person directly to speak with him or her. I think it takes away from getting to know your coworkers, and keeps a lot of anonymity instead.

  2. I have two. The first is using blackberry or other devices to type emails during meetings. The second is being overly tethered to mobile devices, such as answering too many cell phone calls or immediately responding to emails when in a meeting or conversation. I tend to try to balance being flexible and always available with some structure and courtesy.

  3. I happen to work in the technology field and definitely see value in expediting communication through the use of mobile phones/email/blogs/social networking and IMs. However, there is and always will be a time and place for "speaking" via phone and meeting with people in person. I honestly see the two generations younger than me relying way too heavily on digital communication and many lack proper "people" skills because of a reliance on digital forms of sending information.
